WOLF EEL AQUARIUM SKIN

Regardless of age or color, every wolf eel has a dorsal fin that runs the length of its body, as well as a unique pattern of dark spots that allows it be individually identified. Mature wolf eels can range from bluish gray to brown to green-even red. The Wolf Eel may be kept in a reef aquarium, but will eat smaller fish and crustaceans. Juvenile wolf eels look quite different from adults: they’re burnt orange in color and spotted. The aquarium should have a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape. Their powerful jaws help them grip and crush a variety of prey including crabs, sea urchins, snails, mussels and clams.

A layer of slim covers the skin of a Wolf Eel. Over time, this color will fade to brown, gray, or green. In fact, I highly recommend this fish be kept with other. When they are first born, Wolf Eels have bright orange coloring. The wolf eel blenny has a temperament and size that would prohibit keeping it in most reef tanks. Both parents contribute to keeping the eggs safe over the 13 to 16 weeks when they are developing. They make their homes in caves and crevices in water that’s as shallow as subtidal and as deep as 700 feet. Wolf Eels are fish that often mate for life. Wolf eels can be up to eight feet long and have over 200 vertebrae (compare that to the 33 in human spines!). January 4 is all about wolf eels, which actually aren’t eels at all-they’re fish!
